I love my red hair

Something about dying my hair gives me a confidence boost instantly!

At the same time, I am a mom of twin toddlers

I try to take enough showers, but often I barely have time to clean my body

When I was researching dry shampoo to find out if it can help me keep up with oily hair, I also needed to know … Does dry shampoo affect hair dye?

I needed a solution, but I like to know what to expect

I am a researcher!

So I got to work

I needed to know if dry shampoo fades my hair dye and if dry shampoo reacts to hair dye

No time for accidents!

I had chemical burns from a shampoo recently and was not taking any chances

Does Dry Shampoo Affect Hair Dye?

Is it ok to dye your hair with dry shampoo in it?

Dry shampoo is mainly made of powders like corn starch, but there are other ingredients as well

Just like most things you buy at the store, there are some chemicals in it

That isn’t always something to worry about, but it is something to consider when you are dying your hair

These chemicals can make dye less effective, create a chemical reaction, or change the desired color after dying

The same goes for using bleach and dry shampoo together

Remember that dry shampoo is a powder so it doesn’t leave your hair fully until washed

So if you bleach your hair, even if it has been a couple of days since you used dry shampoo, there is a possibility for the same reactions possible with dye

It is also a good idea to let your hair get a little dirty when you plan to bleach it

So plan ahead!

If you plan to bleach or dye your hair, skip the shampoo and the dry shampoo until after you are done with all of those chemicals

We don’t want the dry shampoo affect hair dye when you put it in!

Is dry shampoo safe on color-treated hair?

There are usually no reactions to already color-treated hair when you use dry shampoo

I use dry shampoo once or twice a week and have no issues with my bright red hair!

I made sure to choose a brand that did not leave any white residue when used

And I am careful about following directions when putting it on

I can’t even tell that I used dry shampoo!

The oil is reduced, I don’t have to shampoo my hair (which does fade my color), and I am ready to face the day

It is important to keep in mind that not all products are the same

They use different ingredients and those formulas will work differently

If you use dry shampoo and notice that your color is fading quicker than normal, try using a different brand!

Or using it less often

Dry shampoo is helpful if you want to shampoo less often

But it isn’t perfect

How many days can you use dry shampoo?

Dry shampoo can be a great tool when a shower is just not possible

As a mom, I get it!

I never thought about trying dry shampoo until I was a mom

Even though it is a great tool, we shouldn’t overuse it

There are a few reasons for this:

  1. It doesn’t clean your hair
  2. Can create buildup on hair and scalp
  3. Can lead to breakage
  4. Can clog the hair follicles

With all of that in mind, doctors recommend limiting dry shampoo to twice in a row

After that, a shower is needed

Does Dry Shampoo Affect Hair Dye?

What should you look out for when choosing a dry shampoo?

There are many brands of dry shampoo, which means that are many formulas for dry shampoo!

First I want to go over some ingredients to avoid

  1. Sulfate

The first thing you want to look for is sulfate-free dry shampoo

This isn’t because of color, it is just to keep healthy hair in general

  1. Parabens

Another ingredient to avoid is paraben

Paraben is a preservative often used in cosmetic products

Sadly it can affect your hormones, affect fertility, and risk cancer

  1. Petrolatum

Petrolatum is not really harmful, but it can cause skin irritations

So I wanted to include it so you can be aware!

If you are using a dry shampoo that is irritating your skin, check for petrolatum and try one with out it to see if that helps

  1. Talc

Talc is used in cosmetics pretty often, but it is not very safe

Talc has been linked to cancer

I know!

Everyone says that about everything!

But is it worth the risk when you can choose a brand without it?

  1. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)

SLS creates the foaming effect that we love so much in a shampoo

Even if we don’t expect that from a dry shampoo, it still appears in some ingredient lists

SLS can harm hair follicles if left on the scalp, along with other negative effects
